Sunrise, Skylight Polarization, and the Early Morning Orientation of Night-migrating Warblers

چکیده

Field observations reveal that night-migrating passerines sometimes fly during early morning hours. Functional consideration of daytime flights have overshadowed proximate questions regarding the sensory basis of daytime orientation. I conducted a series of early morning cage-orientation experiments in spring with four species of migrating warblers (Parulinae) on the north coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Whereas birds were poorly oriented on overcast mornings, the headings for three species were oriented in a seasonally appropriate direction when individuals were tested on clear mornings with the horizon glow from the rising sun visible. Moreover, the direction of activity was influenced in a predictable way by manipulating the pattern of skylight polarization. Skylight at sunrise appears to function as a source of directional information for morning flights of migrating warblers. This interpretation is consistent with field observations of the orientation behavior of free-flying migrants, and reinforces speculation that solar-related information is involved in the orientation of ongoing migratory flight, or redetermined orientation following nighttime displacements. In any case, the responsiveness of several species in a cage situation may allow controlled experiments on the question of course correction and redetermined migratory flight.

Behavioural and physiological mechanisms of polarized light sensitivity in birds.

Polarized light (PL) sensitivity is relatively well studied in a large number of invertebrates and some fish species, but in most other vertebrate classes, including birds, the behavioural and physiological mechanism of PL sensitivity remains one of the big mysteries in sensory biology. Many organisms use the skylight polarization pattern as part of a sun compass for orientation, navigation and...

An Evaluation of Skylight Polarization Patterns for Navigation

Skylight polarization provides a significant navigation cue for certain polarization-sensitive animals. However, the precision of the angle of polarization (AOP) of skylight for vehicle orientation is not clear. An evaluation of AOP must be performed before it is utilized. This paper reports an evaluation of AOP of skylight by measuring the skylight polarization patterns of clear and cloudy ski...

Night-migratory garden warblers can orient with their magnetic compass using the left, the right or both eyes.

Several studies have suggested that the magnetic compass of birds is located only in the right eye. However, here we show that night-migrating garden warblers (Sylvia borin) are able to perform magnetic compass orientation with both eyes open, with only the left eye open and with only the right eye open. We did not observe any clear lateralization of magnetic compass orientation behaviour in th...

Polarization transition between sunlit and moonlit skies with possible implications for animal orientation and Viking navigation: anomalous celestial twilight polarization at partial moon.

Using full-sky imaging polarimetry, we measured the celestial distribution of polarization during sunset and sunrise at partial (78% and 72%) and full (100%) moon in the red (650 nm), green (550 nm), and blue (450 nm) parts of the spectrum. We investigated the temporal change of the patterns of degree p and angle α of linear polarization of sunlit and moonlit skies at dusk and dawn. We describe...

Migratory orientation in a narrow avian hybrid zone

BACKGROUND Zones of contact between closely related taxa with divergent migratory routes, termed migratory divides, have been suggested as areas where hybrid offspring may have intermediate and inferior migratory routes, resulting in low fitness of hybrids and thereby promoting speciation. In the Rocky Mountains of Canada there is a narrow hybrid zone between Audubon's and myrtle warblers that ...
